EL PASO, Texas – From the press box above Cohen Stadium, the infield and outfield grass is mostly dry and faded.

The only thing flat on the baseball diamond is the dirt, making anything hit on the grass a near adventure with all of the indentations.

I called ahead for a media credential, was given the name of a person to ask for and showed up at the stadium for Friday night’s  (May 18) game between the hometown El Paso Diablos of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, and the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks.

Monday night, former first-round pick Cesar Ramos won his first major-league game, in relief for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ramos is one of those guys who have stuck with it despite perhaps never having met the expectations placed upon him when he was the 35th pick of the 2005 MLB amateur draft.  He’s certainly been humbled by the game.

That didn’t seem to matter much to Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who announced before Sunday’s game that Arias would replace Pablo Sandoval at third base on an everyday basis until Sandoval returns from a hand injury that could take at least another month to heal.

Arias is a lanky and lean 27-year-old infielder from the Dominican Republic who is the definition of a baseball journeyman even as a young man. Called up from Class AAA Fresno on April 25, Arias has appeared in 15 games since.  And while he’s gone cold with the bat in recent days, his defense has helped the team.

I didn’t grow up being into heavy metal music. So a lot of songs from that genre just passed by me in my younger days.

It didn’t make much sense to me that “Enter Sandman” was Mariano Rivera’s entrance song.  But if you’re a baseball fan, you always knew what it meant.

Dodgers in Americas Finest City

At some point Friday night you had to feel for the San Diego Padres, a night when the Los Angeles Dodgers made themselves at home after a 6-0 victory at Petco Park.

Not only did the Dodgers take advantage of Petco Park’s supposedly-pitcher-friendly dimensions, but around the fifth inning — with San Diego’s Orlando Hudson at the plate, mind you — they began blaring Mariachi over the sound system. It’s as if the Padres were trying to make Dodger fans feel at home, and, yes, maybe they’re catering
